OpenMBEE Leadership: Chas Galey

Charles "Chas" Galey is a Senior Principal Systems Engineer and Software Architect with over 15 years of experience spearheading digital transformation initiatives across aerospace, defense, and commercial sectors. As a transformative industry leader, Chas has pioneered innovative model-based approaches that bridge traditional systems engineering with cutting-edge software development methodologies, directly contributing to successful contract captures across industry. A founding member of the OpenMBEE community, Chas provides strategic vision for the open-source ecosystem while actively contributing to critical projects including the View Editor and Cameo Model Development Kit.

Chas was the original co-creator of the Kernel Modeling Language (KerML) contributing that and other expertise as metamodel co-lead for SysMLv2 at the Object Management Group (OMG), where he also leads the UMLv3 RFI creating interoperability between systems and software engineering domains. His standards work establishes pathways for interdisciplinary engineering collaboration across diverse industries.

With a background spanning aerospace giants like Sierra Nevada Corporation, Lockheed Martin, and JPL, Chas has architected enterprise-scale model-based solutions including graph-based digital data capture systems using Neo4j, Infrastructure as Code frameworks for cloud deployments, and open-source engineering integration platforms. He specializes in TypeScript/JavaScript, Java, and cloud technologies with proven success implementing MBSE methodologies that deliver tangible business value from concept through production.

Chas holds an M.Eng. in Space Systems Engineering from the University of Michigan and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wyoming.
